Sandra Manning and Jayne Benge became Grieving Overwhelmed Widows Negotiating Stuff....within months of each other in 2014, and together they used a shared love of humour to help them with those early negotiations. The benefits were undeniable...leading them to form the concept of GOWNS which...at its heart...has the use of laughter and humour as a therapeutic aid in grief.
Losing a partner or spouse is about as life changing as it gets...something which Sandra and Jayne had to experience for themselves to fully understand the fullness of that statement.
Death and humour may not seem to be natural bedfellows...and for some? Quite possibly inconceivable, which is why we ask people considering joining us at GOWNS to take a look at the 'about you' page before deciding whether the use of laughter and humour as a therapy in grief is right for you.
It is said that 'Laughter is the best medicine' and through our research we have found scientific evidence to show that laughter :
Is an effective stress reliever - Muscles relax for up to 45 minutes after a good giggle.
Boosts the immune system - As stress hormones decrease...the production of infection fighting anti-bodies and immune cells increase, protecting our bodies against illness...a huge benefit as GOWNS often suffer compromise to their immunity as a result of their loss and grief.
Releases endorphins - A natural 'feel good' chemical which can even act as a temporary form of pain relief, and promotes a sense of well-being.
Increases blood flow - Blood vessels perform more efficiently, increasing blood flow, a real advantage in the prevention of heart disease and cardio-vascular problems.
Burns calories! - Ok...it may not be a substitute for the gym...but laughing for 10-15 minutes per day can burn up to 40 calories each time.
GOWNS will soon be offering workshops on how to access the many benefits of using laughter during the process of grieving. Regular updates will be provided on the notice board.

“I remember the title of my first post as though I had written it yesterday ‘knock…knock…don’t really want to come in’. I felt like a child who had turned up to a party in shoes several sizes too big carrying a present that would turn out to be a turd in gift wrap…all of which would render me a permanent out cast from the group I was hoping to join”
